Do’s And Don’ts Of Outfits For Family Photos That You Need To Know
One of the biggest challenges that families face when preparing for a family photo shoot is deciding what to wear. You want to make sure that everyone looks great and that your outfits complement each other, but it can be tough to know where to start! That's why I've put together this guide to explain the do's and don'ts of outfits for family photos.
DO choose Mom’s outfit first
Choosing Mom’s outfit first helps give you a starting point. You can base everyone else’s outfit around this foundation.
DO coordinate instead of match
Wear a complimentary color palette of 3-4 colors, such as earth tones and neutrals with a pop of color. Having everyone wear colors that compliment each other elevates the photo, as opposed to putting everyone in the same color, which can fall a little flat.
DON’T put everyone in the same pattern
You want a good combination of solid colors and patterns. Too many patterns can make the photo too busy. No buffalo plaid x 4, please!
DO stay comfortable
Choosing clothing that you feel comfortable and confident in is key. If you aren’t comfortable, it will show through in your photos. We want everyone feeling like themselves for these family photos!
DO mix patterns and textures
Mixing textures and patterns can add dimension to the images. Think silk, linen, and waffle for textures, and stripes, polka dots, and florals for patterns. The combination of these different visuals can really pull the entire look together.
DON’T wear bright colors or large logos
Bright colors and large words or logos on clothing can be distracting. The busier the clothing, the less your family’s love will show through. The focus should be on your family, not your clothes.
DO opt for accessories
Accessories can be a great way to show off some personality without taking away from the photos as a whole. This can include bowties, suspenders, hats, hair bows, shackets, vests, and more!
